He is very responsive to any questions or issues you have. I was able to flash the optical drive and test it. (I will update if that changes as I will be using the drive a ton this weekend)Īlso, side note is that Billy sends the flash file to you BEFORE you pay him the $25 fee.

I have ran probably a dozen titles through the device since the flash and have experienced zero issues. However, as soon as the flash installation was completed, I ran a test burn on my PC and sure enough, it worked! I then proceeded to move the drive back to my mac burn station and have been successful ripping dvd, blu ray and UHD videos with the machine. I have both a PC and Mac and run MakeMKV primarily on the mac, so I had to move the drive over to the PC and install MakeMKV on that machine for the flash installation. The drive must be hooked up to a PC (not MAC) for the flash.

The drive is working flawless after the flash and now is able to read 4K UHD videos that it would not read before. NOTE: Billy remotely flashed my BH16NS40 this week. After scrolling through tons of MakeMKV threads, I came across Billy's posts. I searched the internet for the best solutions for ripping my UHD 4K video collection but did NOT want to flash the drive myself. I recently purchased a OWC Mercury Pro with the BH16NS40 drive (basically the same drive as the WH just rebranded for OWC). IF YOU HAVE THE WH16NS40 or BH16NS40 ALREADY, SEE BELOW: If you don't have a drive yet, buy one from Billy Carlson. Just be aware that you won't likely have 100% success in getting 4k discs to work and you could potentially brick your drive permanently. If you have the NS50 version and you don't mind giving it a try, check out the link provided by Poker354. The WH16NS40 drive is not an "official" 4k drive and that is why it comes with a list of caveats. There are many methods to rolling back the firmware, most are not straightforward and it's possible you'll brick your drive. If you have the NS50 version and your firmware is higher than 1.2, it will be impossible to use this drive to rip 4k discs without different firmware. If you have the NS40 version of the drive you won't have much (any?) success getting 4k discs to rip.

Before I bricked my drive I was only successful in ripping 3 of my 15 4k discs. The makemkv developer has a custom firmware for the NS50 version of the drive (manufactured after 2015) that will successfully rip 4k. Is it the WH16NS40 (svc NS50) drive or the WH16NS40 (svc NS40) drive? If you look at the model number, there will be a revision number next to it.
